ATTENDING PHYSICIANS' PERCEPTIONS AND ATTITUDES OF TEACHING HOUSESTAFF IN THE MEDICAL ICU

TOPIC: Education, Research, and Quality Improvement TYPE: Original Investigations PURPOSE: The education of residents in critical care is largely accomplished through teaching while they rotate the medical intensive unit (MICU). A didactic curriculum to enhance house staff our MICU exists, but it's effectiveness hindered by limited implementation inconsistent use. In this study, we hope identify barriers ideas inform routine self-sustaining use curriculum. METHODS: study was a prospective survey attitudes attending faculty at single-center. All who attend least 4 weeks annually were invited participate. IRB-approved consent obtained. completed an anonymous, web-based survey. RESULTS: 21 people met inclusion criteria. There 12 responses survey, giving response rate 57%. One declined Out 11 consented participate, 9 (81%) know there formal those 9, 6 (67%) reported using it teach. top three motivations for are improve housestaff knowledge, because enjoy (each chosen 10 respondents, 91%), think can patient (chosen 82%). 7 (64%) identified improving knowledge as most important factor. Many identified, with team being too busy (9/11, 82%), not having sufficient time prepare content (6/11, 55%), knowing what have already been taught (4/11, 36%) barriers. 5 (45%) barrier.
